It is always the aim of most of Art Student from High School (Secondary School) to study Law at University Level but due to competition in Nigerian Universities most of these student are given other courses such as English, Political Science and some other less competitive Art courses instead of Law they originally applied for .
So, if you have loose hope of studying Law because because of the course you were admitted to, when you apply to study law, I want to inform you that you can still proceed and further to study Law (course of your choice) after graduating from other Art Department or Courses, provided you have the good grade to compete.
How Possible is it to Switch from Art Courses Such as English Political Science, Mass Communication, e.t.c to law after the first degree?
It is very possible and in fact I called it "Hot Cake".
If you are lucky to graduate with the minimum of second class lower, you are eligible to apply for Direct Entry and switch course from Political Science, Mass Communication, English e.t.c to Law after your First Degree from the University. though graduates with better grade have advantage over others, just as it is in normal admission process.
I only mentioned the aforementioned Art Courses because that are the most popular, it should be noted that other are courses are also accepted to switch and study Law after graduation.

After you have know and understood that it is possible to switch courses from other Art Courses to Law, so I should discuss with you here how to go about it.
Universities in Nigeria consider First Degree holders for Direct Entry Admission in 200 Level or 300 Level to study Law depending on school, with that you may need to visit or call the admission office of your school of choice to make further enquiries.
There are simple steps you have to follow, as you will be consider to be applying for another admission entirely but Direct Entry Admission this time around.You are required to take the following steps.
- Obtain the JAMB Direct Entry form: The JAMB Direct Entry form usually commence and end concurrent with UTME Form
- Obtain Institution Direct Entry form when commence: Some Institution conduct exam for direct entry candidates and some do not.
Also, there is diversity in requirement for each school for Direct Entry Admission into Law Programme,especially for Degree Holder.
REQUIREMENTS to Switch from Art Courses Such as English Political Science, Mass Communication, e.t.c to law after the first degree?
These requirements below are just minimum requirements, all other requirement apart from the unlisted requirements should be directed to the school admission office or visit the institution website.
- Ambrose Ali University accepts only first degree second class lower plus the UTME requirements. AAUA requires 'O' Level credit passes in Literature in English and Mathematics.
- University of Benin accept Degree with at least second-class lower division.
- BOWEN University, Iwo accepts a University degree of not less than a second-class lower division plus 'O' Levelcredit passes in English Language and Literature in English,
- University of Calabar accepts First Degree (Second Class Lower).
- Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University formerly Anambra State University accept first degree at least second class lower. Does not require Literature in English for degree holders.
- University of ILORIN does not require Literature in English for degree holders.
- Crescent University, Abeokuta accepts degree
- Ebonyi State University accepts degree in Arts or Social Science subjects in addition to the UTME requirements.
- University of Ibadan (UI) accepts good first degree with 'O' Level credit pass in English Language.
- JOS accepts any class of first degree but does not accept NCE, ND and HND.
- LAGOS acceptsVery good passes in JUPEB/A' Level Subjects: Literature-in-English and any two Arts or Social Sciences. FirstDegree with a minimum of Second Class Upper."Lagos does not accept JUPEB / A' level passes in Fine Arts, Accounting or Commerce".
- Lagos State University (LASU) requires first degree minimum of third class plus 'O' Level credit passes in five (5) subjects to include English Language and Literature in English.
- Niger Delta University (NDU) accepts second class honours degree of this University or any other University recognized by Senate. Plus 'O' Levelcredit passesor equivalents in five (5) subjects to include English Language, Literature in English and Mathematics plus
- Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) accepts first degree with a minimum of 2nd Class Honours plus the UTME requirements.
- Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) accepts a degree in Arts or Social Sciences not lower than a second class lower plus the basic UTME requirements.
- Patrick Henry College (PHC) accepts a first degree from a recognized University with a minimum of Second Class Honours, including UTME entry requirements.
- Rivers State University (RSUST) accepts Candidates with First Degree from a recognized University with a minimum of Second Class Honours (Lower) Division. However, preference shall be given to candidates with Second Class Honours (Upper) Division or higher degrees.
- UNIOSUN accepts University degree of Osun State University, in a relevant programme - of not less than a second class lower division or any other recognised University in a relevant programme.
- Edo University, Iyamho (EUI) accepts B.Sc. in relevant field not below Second Class Lower.
- Delta State University, Abraka (DELSU) accepts Degrees in the Humanities for Law.
CONCLUSION:
It is very import to make further enquiries before choosing any schools, as all the requirements highlighted on this page are just the basic requirements, so there maybe some other thing you may need to know which may not be publicly published.
