After NCE Programme, What Next? A-Z Guide for NCE Graduate



Larger Percentage of Nigeria student want to further their education in University after High School, but due to the competition in the Nigerian University, thousands of candidates/Applicants are denied of admission every year.

So most of the candidates denied by the Universities resolve to Colleges of Education, and if such candidates graduate what could be the next step is what this post want to highlight for you in detail.

What is NCE?

NCE means Nation Certificate in Education, it is the certificate obtained from College of Education after three year programme.

You are required to have completed High School and passed WAEC, NECO or NABTEB before you can be admitted to College of Education. Admission is also through JAMB like other higher institution.

What Next After NCE Programme

Answer to this question is not straight forward, because this depend on what you really want for your self but basically with NCE Certificated you can go for one of the follow options:
  1. Continuation of Studies
  2. Seek for Job  

Seeking for Job After NCE

A National Certificate in Education (NCE) holder is eligible to apply for job in both Private and Public settings in Education and other industries.

Education industry seems to be the only industry at which NCE holder can secure job, like when you gain admission into College of Education, people will be referring to you as teacher to be, but I want you to know that with your NCE you are not linted to Teaching job.

So, if you are choosing Job seeking option after NCE, you should be aware that there will be a time where certificate of higher level will be require of you at you place of work,  if you  want to be promoted.


How to further Studies After NCE

Furthering of study as an option for NCE graduate is more advisable, and this can be done in several ways.

1. Direct Entry into University
2. Part-time/Distance Learning Programme
3. Sandwich Programme

1. Direct Entry into University

An NCE graduate can process admission into University full time Programme to study related course and be awarded BEd or BSc(Ed) depending on school.

In this case candidate have to take the following steps:
  1. Obtain JAMB Direct Entry Form and make the university intended as first choice.  
  2. Obtain the School POST D.E Form
  3. Processed for POST D.E Exam for candidates that choose schools that conduct POST DE Exams
  4. Wait for Admission List 

2. Part-time/Distance Learning  

If you were able to secure job after NCE this option is advisable as it it make it easy for you to study and work at the same.

In this case you are not require to obtain JAMB . you are only require to make choice of school and obtain the Application Form of the institution at which you like to run the programme.

Most of Universities in Nigeria have Part-time Programme but Distance Learing Programme is not common to all Universities.

Distance Learning Centre in Nigeria include OAU DLC, UI DLC LAUTECH ODL et.c but the only university which is Distance Learning based University is: 

Nation Open University of Nigeria (NOUN): NOUN is popular known for its incomparable distance learing programme , most of the activities of the Institution including test is online, only Exam are scheduled to hold at the Study Centres.

    3. SANDWICH PROGRAMME

    This is also Part-time Programme mainly for working class especially teachers  to study in the Faculty of Education which are  available during the long vacation in the Universities. This programme does not require JAMB just like other Part-time/Distance Learning Programme
